I won’t sit idly by and watch my life pass before my eyes

A millennial’s coming-of-age story

My name is Emily and I’m 30 years old. I’ve been writing on this blog in fits and spurts since I was 14, originally as “Blackbyrd” on blackbyrd.wordpress.com. I’ve long been enamored by the written word and have scribbled poems and sonnets in countless notebooks since I was 7.

Today I’m a classically trained journalist who has built a successful career in corporate marketing. On this blog I write about my musings while traveling all over the world and riding my bike.

Welcome to my never-ending coming-of-age story.

Thanks for visiting!

  • The only birdie left

I guess I never thought that this part of my life would actually come. I spent so much time looking forward to it yet dreading it at the same time that I didn’t even notice when it actually arrived. • I’m a global deejay

Two days ago I was shocked at myself. While shuffling through my iTunes song by song, I noticed that many of the songs that I passed by had NEVER been played. I thought to myself, now, what’s the point in having all of these songs if I don’t even take the time to listen to Read more

This past week was theater camp Read more

  • I wasn’t prepared: a flood story

PART I: Yesterday my mom and I went to our favorite mall after a night out camping. We set out with high hopes and big smiles. The sun started to shine after a long stormy night, and though I wished I would have brought my bright pink sunglasses, I was content. We met a road Read more

  • Someday monkey won’t play piano song

If you don’t already know, I am a huge fan of The Beatles. Listening to their music is like traveling back in time. I can Imagine myself wearing bell bottom pants and listening to their records with friends. I would probably have had crazy curly hippie hair that makes me look like I’m a Dizzy Read more

  • Playing mom

The dishwasher has been unloaded and loaded, cans have been distributed to the recycling bin in the garage and the last piece of cheese pizza left over from last night has been eaten to provide me with the necessary fuel to carry on. Upstairs, the hallway is a complete disaster. Every piece of clothing from Read more
