I won’t sit idly by and watch my life pass before my eyes

A millennial’s coming-of-age story

My name is Emily and I’m 30 years old. I’ve been writing on this blog in fits and spurts since I was 14, originally as “Blackbyrd” on blackbyrd.wordpress.com. I’ve long been enamored by the written word and have scribbled poems and sonnets in countless notebooks since I was 7.

Today I’m a classically trained journalist who has built a successful career in corporate marketing. On this blog I write about my musings while traveling all over the world and riding my bike.

Welcome to my never-ending coming-of-age story.

Thanks for visiting!

  • Small print used to scare me

Scout is hilarious. She reminds me of myself. …I’m reading To Kill A Mockingbird. It’s been on my Shelfari “I plan to read” shelf for quite some time. To Kill A Mockingbird was a summer reading option for me before I entered ninth grade honors English. I, preferring adventure, chose to read The Hobbit, instead. I was one Read more

  • One last phone call

I miss my best friend. I want to write him letters all the time but don’t want him to worry about me. He deserves to be worried about more. Robby’s been at basic training for over two weeks now (eight to go!). The cool thing is, I still get to see him. His battalion posts Read more

Goldfish and Jenna Marbles remind me of my friend Tayler. Before leaving school, we formed a tight bond (Happy Sexual Wednesday, by the way!). SpongeBob reminds Read more

  • A little boy named Isaac

So, there’s this little boy. His name is Isaac and he is adorable. He is my cousin’s 9-month-old baby boy. I reactivated my Facebook so I could see pictures of him. Sue me.  [hypocrite] Read more

  • The cure

I read a fact on Twitter about a month ago. It concerned Facebook and was something along the lines of: “Women with Facebook profiles tend to have lower self-esteem.” Needless to say, I deactivated my account later that week. I’ve been off Facebook for almost a month. It has been a refreshing one. I’m finding Read more

  • Ready to fire

I’m not supposed to step on anyone’s toes. I’m supposed to sit tight and keep my mouth shut. Needless to say, in retrospect, it’s been a difficult year. So many opinions flood through my brain. My mouth is quick to open, my tongue taking aim; ready to fire. And then I shut my mouth. I Read more
