millennial blog project

I won’t sit idly by and watch my life pass before my eyes

A millennial’s coming-of-age story

My name is Emily and I’m 30 years old. I’ve been writing on this blog in fits and spurts since I was 14, originally as “Blackbyrd” on blackbyrd.wordpress.com. I’ve long been enamored by the written word and have scribbled poems and sonnets in countless notebooks since I was 7.

Today I’m a classically trained journalist who has built a successful career in corporate marketing. On this blog I write about my musings while traveling all over the world and riding my bike.

Welcome to my never-ending coming-of-age story.

Thanks for visiting!

  • Oh, how I hate root beer

I am rather picky when it comes to soda pop (where I’m from we call it just “pop,” and get mad at people that call it “soda.”) I do not like any dark colored pops, and I swear that I am NOT racist. • Visiting the bro

For the past two summers, my eldest brother has been writing for The Chautauquan Daily newspaper that is distributed by little paper boys all across The Chautauqua Institution. Other than the snobby, old rich people, I actually would not mind living there. Last summer we visited him at his job and went on a walk Read more

  • Setting the pace

When I do not feel like hearing nature on a run, I just plug into my iPod and take off. Here are songs that help me through a long, exhausting run; derived from my “Workout Tunes” playlist. “Bleeding Mascara” – Atreyu “Bodies” – Drowning Pool (Really gets me pumped!) “Milkshake” – Goodnight Nurse (A cover Read more

  • Everybody is Toast!

Thank you, Nickelodeon, for introducing the genius that is Jimmy Neutron to the world. Back before we had cable (the Stone Age), my parents purchased the Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius movie on a videotape for us kids to enjoy. I was excited to watch the movie, and one of my brothers was excited to watch Read more
